Research And Development
Focused primarily on mesenchymal stem cells and hematopoietic stem cells
Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC's)
Mesenchymal stem cells are spindle shaped multipotent cells that are plastic adherent in tissue culture. They have been identified from a number of tissues such as bone marrow, adipose, umbilical cord, umbilical cord blood and menstrual fluid. They do not express hematopoietic lineage markers such as CD34 and CD45. However, they express non-hematopoietic lineage markers such as CD73, CD90 and CD105 on their surface. They can minimally differentiate along osteogenic, chondrogenic and adipogenic lineages. Mesenchymal stem cells have the capacity to home into sites of injury.
Further, they have been found to be potent immunomodulators and have pro-angiogenic, anti-fibrotic and anti-apoptotic properties. In addition, microvesicles derived from mesenchymal stem cells have been shown to have significant antitumor effects. These characteristics have made mesenchymal stem cells attractive candidates for cell therapy.

Hematopoietic Stem Cells (HSC's)
Hematopoietic stem cells constitute the best studied stem cell population given that are found at the apex of the blood cell hierarchy. Thus, myeloid lineage cells such as erythrocytes, megakaryocytes, platelets, basophils, eosinophils, neutrophils, monocytes and macrophages, and lymphoid lineage cells such as T cells, B cells and natural killer cells are all obtained from hematopoietic stem cells.
Hematopoietic stem cells are found in umbilical cord blood and in small numbers in peripheral blood. In the adult they are primarily resident in the red bone marrow and give rise, sequentially, to multipotent progenitor cells, oligopotent progenitor cells and unipotent progenitor cells and finally the mature terminally differentiated blood cell types. Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, that is the basis of bone marrow transplantation, has been the cornerstone of stem cell therapy.
